Bookshelves and Such

For most book bloggers and readers that I know, bookshelves and book storage is a frequently-talked about topic. There are so many different ways that people store and treat their books. Some people use shelves... others use stacks... and for some people the books are just thrown about.

So today I want to know how you story your books and/or treat them.

Bookmarks or Dog-Ear?

Shelved, Stacked, or Random?

Keep, Give Away, or Throw Away?

I personally like to shelve my books and use bookmarks. But, when I was younger (5 maybe?) I was a dog-earer. I keep most of the books I read, because I end up liking most of the books I own. Every few months I go through them and decide which ones I can live without and donate them.
But as of recently. I have been running out of space on my bookshelves. I have one HUGE bookshelf that stretches the length of one of my bedroom walls and it was full about a month ago. Then I made room for one more medium sized bookshelf in my room. But that one is 3/4 full now. So I may end up stacking my books. Only time will tell.

So... how about you?

  1. Wow, I keep a lot of books and I prefer to use a bookmark or bus ticket to mark, but since they end up in my handbag quite often it's no good being too precious. And yeah I am out of shelf space.

  2. YAY, I have been waiting for this to come on... I as well am out of bookshelves, and we still have 400+ books to move down to where we live now.. filling 7 bookshelves already

At the moment all the books are shelved, except for the books in storage(Rubermaid airtight bins)

As far as how I treat books.. hubby and I are gentle books readers.. with velvet bookmarks even, we cherish our books.. after reading a book if we don't like it we either donate to local library or to other book lovers.. We have our "prized collection" which is displayed behind glass. Our 4 and 6 year old have been taught at a very early age, how to treat books, and are book lovers as well.

I know it may sound overboard, we just feel that books can be passed on through the ages as our family grows, Honest, if we could build a house from scratch having built in bookshelves spanning every wall, we would thoroughly enjoy filling them with the book treasures.

  4. Always bookmark. I used to dogear when I didn't have anything to use as a bookmark. Now with all the author swag I have, I have no excuse, lol.

Shelved and Stacked- I have regular bookcases where there are shelves and then my spine bookcase which has books stacked with dividers every 6 inches or so.

I usually keep all the books I get, unless they are final copies, in which case I might give them to the library. Not sure what to do with ARCs. I really need to give them away somehow without breaking the bank from sending out packages.

I'm also running out of space too and usually end up using the floor until I can make room somewhere. Hopefully in the new place, things will be better organized.
